Coping with Gendered Welfare Stigma: Exploring Everyday Accounts of Stigma and Resistance Strategies among Mothers Who Claim Social Security Benefits

Drawing upon findings from a qualitative project exploring welfare stigma in the lives of women Merseyside, this article examines experiences and resistance strategies among mothers interviewed. The provides insights into how gendered manifests reliant on social security benefits present era continued reform. mothers’ are argued to revolve around devaluation caring labour, perception that undeserved notion ‘bad motherhood’. Furthermore, contributes knowledge about strategies, including acknowledging value care rejecting blaming narratives. Nonetheless, it is owing power pervasiveness structurally-imposed stigma, individualised limited must also engage everyday management techniques.
